New Highland Dancing Class for all ages and abilities starting Tuesday 19th August 2008 at Broxburn Academy, West Lothian 4.00 - 5.00pm.

Dating back to before recorded history, the Highland Dances of Scotland were originally highly athletic male dances of triumph, joy, and other reflections of emotion. Competitive Highland dancing as we know it began during the revival of interest in Highland culture during the 19th century. Women first began competing at the turn of the century. Highland dances require both athletic and artistic skill and are danced both informally and in competition.

Nowadays, Highland dancing, which can be seen at nearly every modern day Highland games event, is a highly competitive and technical dance form which requires many hours of practice and training over a period of several years to perfect. In terms of its technical requirements and the training required for its performance, Highland dancing has much in common with ballet. It takes a massive amount of stamina and leg strength.

Not only do we stick to the traditional highland dances such as The Highland Fling and Sword Dance, we will also cheorograph dances to songs such as Flower of Scotland, Shang a lang and such likes to inject some more “fun” into this dance type, especially for our younger members!

Whether you would like to learn Highland Dancing for fun or to compete and sit exams, this class in guaranteed to be informative and fun!
